White Privilege - What is it and How You Can Help

Hey guys! It's Tuesday, and I have a new post for you! This post is about a kinda sensitive topic, so, before reading the post, please remember that I never intended to offend anybody, and I am not pointing fingers at anybody.

I'm sure you've all heard about the heart - breaking incident that occurred recently. George Floyd, an African American man in police custody, died after a white police officer, Devin Chauvin, kept kneeling on his neck even after he told the officer that he couldn't breathe. Numerous protests have broken out in various American cities and even in other countries in response to this injustice. The only reason George Floyd died was because of the colour of his skin. How sick, how disgusting is that? I have no words to express how much this bothers me. What happened to our humanity? I am glad to see that so many people are speaking up against this injustice, but what happens when this topic is no longer trending? Will you forget this and dismiss it from your memory as another sad incident, or will you keep fighting against racism? I'm writing this post to let you know what you can do to make the world a safe place for everybody, irregardless of the colour of their skin.

In case you want to know the full story of how George Floyd was killed, I'm going to add it here. Source : BBC News

Incidents like this tell us why it is important to learn about white privilege, and how we can use it to make the world a better place.Let's get started. What is white privilege? White privilege is the privilege that white people have due to their skin colour. It can be something as small as going to a supermarket and finding makeup products and clothes that complement white skin to getting a job because you're white. It is something as small as seeing your race widely represented in media to something as big as getting away with crime because of your race. This does not mean that you life hasn't been hard, it simply means that your skin tone isn't one of the things making it harder. I realize that you may not even be aware that you are privileged. Some common examples of white privilege include:

White privilege also gives white people the privilege of benefit of doubt, while the same courtesy is usually not extended to people with darker skin tones. These points explain what I mean by that:

Why does White privilege exist?

White privilege exists mainly because of the decisions taken by white people in history, which granted privileges to their race and withheld privileges from other races. Colonialism played a major role in this.

A few actions which led to this were:

( these are taken from a very helpful pdf I found on google. I am not including the link as it is very heavy and difficult to understand. However, if you want the link to it, contact me. )

As I said, all of these is history. These decisions were made by people who were quite different from us, and now we have the power to make better decisions.

How can we use White Privilege to help others?

There is only one answer to this question: Speak up. Whenever you see anybody being discriminated, speak up. Talk to fellow white people about white privilege. Educate yourselves. Spread awareness. Donate money. Sign petitions. Do whatever you can, but just do something to make the world a better and safer place for everybody❤

Also, I will not be posting any of my regular content till 7th June, because I personally don't feel comfortable talking about fashion, food, etc when so much is going on in the world. I will slowly resume my normal content after that, but I will not forget what happened. I hope this post helped you, and I hope you have the courage to speak up.
