A (un)holy Christmas

Hey guys! I have some GREAT news!! I entered one of my stories in a holiday writing contest hosted by - https://www.instagram.com/_writing_ideas_/

And today I found out that... I WON!!! I still can't believe this! Some of you asked for the story I wrote, so here it is!

A (un)holy Christmas

The bell was ringing.I picked up my bag and walked out of the class. The hallways were full of noise and movement. Christmas was a holy holiday, but these students only wanted a break from all the stress. Another reason to curse where my immortal life had taken me. To a high school. I stepped into the parking area and started looking for Melissa. Melissa was exactly why I had to pretend to be a mortal, so of course I was annoyed by her existence. But, all things considered, she was good company. Certainly better than most of the people I'd known when I was her age. I found her sitting in my car, her golden brown hair glinting in the sunlight.I walked over to her.She waved to me. "How was your day?" I asked while unlocking the car. "Boring, but it's about to get a lot better. Remember my cousin? The one who moved here? She's arriving today. So I'll see you at 5?" She had a knowing glint in her eyes. She knew I couldn't resist this. "Fine." I replied, turning on the ignition. I let my thoughts wander as I entered my house. Who was this new cousin? A new threat? Our database had no information on this new cousin. As far as the internet was concerned, she was a ghost. I prayed that I wouldn't have to eradicate her too, as I had done countless times with many of Melissa's friends. Dealing with all this was messy, but Melissa was worth it. Not just to me, but to the whole world. I headed over to her house and rang the doorbell. The door opened, and I stumbled backwards in shock. Every instinct in my body told me to run, but I had to save Melissa. "Cael, are you okay?" Melissa's mom was looking at me with a concerned look on her face. "I'm fine," I said, giving her a tight smile. My heart pounding, I started walking and came face to face with Melissa. "Melissa... " I began, but she cut me off and dragged me towards her room. She opened the door, and I almost screamed due to shock.I was instantly paralyzed where I stood. A girl was standing in her room. She looked exactly like a human, but I knew better. What I had feared was happening. I had to get Melissa away from here. " Cael," She began, "This is Lilith. Lilith, meet Cael. He's my best friend." I finally looked at the girl's face. The same shock was mirrored on her beautiful face. She had not known who I was or that I was stationed here. She saw me looking and managed to make a cool, unconcerned expression. " Hey", She said, extending her hand." Call me Lily." I could see her smirking at me. She thought I was too scared to shake her hand. I shook her hand with a large grin on my face. " I'll be back in minute." Melissa left, closing the door behind her. As soon as the door closed, my sword was in my hand, a thousand bolts of electricity crackling at its tip. I lunged at her, but something stopped me and I bounced back. My head felt like it was exploding with pain. When I finally managed to sit up again, I saw that she was sheathed in a cocoon of darkness." Why are you here? Who sent you?" I asked. " I'm here to protect Melissa. And being a demoness and all, it's kinda obvious hell sent me. Why are you here? It was quite a surprise, seeing a guardian angel here." I glared st her. " Do not lie. I am here to protect Melissa. Her life is important to heaven, and hell can only wish to cause her harm." "That's interesting," she smiled mischievously, "Because she's important to hell too. And I will protect her till I die." I gasped in surprise and said, " But that's not possible!" " Well, it is now, golden boy," She replied. " I suggest a truce. We'll both protect her. And before you say anything about how that's breaking rules, I'll tell you something. One, I don't care. Two, I'm not going back, and I'm sure you aren't either. Why not work together? What do you say?" She extended a hand towards me, and hesitantly, I took it. "I'm going on a date! With Jake! Can you believe this?" Melissa screamed at me and Lily in the cafeteria a few days later. That was weird. He'd never payed her much attention. Lily congratulated her. I'd gotten used to Lily, come to like her, even. "My house at 6, okay? I need you guys." Melissa told Lily and me. I agreed. I could bear a few hours with Lily. At least I'll have fun. I was at Melissa's house. I lazily stared out the window as Lily and Melissa debated about what to wear, waiting for this to end so I could go home. " You can't go home." Lily said. I stared at her incredulously. " You can read minds? And why can't I go home?" "Because it's our job to keep Melissa safe, and we can't leave her vulnerable at her date. If you're not coming, I'll go. Alone." I sighed. I had started to trust Lily, but I couldn't take a chance with Melissa's safety."Fine," I replied gloomily. Hiding in the bushes in the middle of winter was a supremely bad idea. This was not how I wanted to spend Christmas. "This was a terrible idea! They're not even doing anything." I told Lily. She laughed. "Where's your Christmas spirit?" "Sorry, that vanished as soon as my fingers started to turn blue." "You're such a Grinch" She said, rolling her eyes. " I wish I was cause at least the green fur would keep me warm." I said, trying not to smile. " How did you end up in hell anyway?" I asked her. " I made a deal. Service to Hell for an eternity in exchange for protection for my family" I looked at her in surprise and felt a spark of something between us. " That's...so brave." I said. "Why did you become a guardian angel?" She looked at me expectantly. " I always liked to protect others, so when I died young, I went to heaven and chose to fight instead of wearing stuffy robes and denouncing all the fun things." Her face lit up and she laughed. She looked so pretty when she did that. She met my eyes, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach as she leaned in. I closed my eyes and she screamed and began running. I followed her, more confused than I'd ever been in my entire existence. I finally caught up to her and and stopped in my tracks. The scene before me took my breath away. Jake turned to me with an inhuman smile, a knife in his hands. I spotted Melissa tied up in a corner, unconscious, and breathed a sigh of relief. I focused on Jake, and took a step back. He was a Divine Being, one of the divine beings. I couldn't fight him,or stop him, or hurt him in any away. The best I could hope for was to allow time for Lily to get Melissa away. I turned to her. She looked at me, and shook her head. She wouldn't run away. She was fighting, and so was I. We began a deadly dance, me,Lily and Jake. Lily lunged first with a sword as dark as night, and flew backwards instantly. Her skull hit the wall with a sickening crunch. Anger blasted through my mind, and I swiped at him. He stepped aside, playing with me like a cat plays with its dinner. It angered me more, and I threw all I had at him. Every single kernel of my power, all the strength I could find within myself, I threw it all at him. A blinding white light shone from him, as my skull bursted with pain. When the light cleared, he emerged again, smiling maliciously. "An admirable effort, but you're a lesser being. If only you had helped me. This girl would've made me the most powerful being, and you would've benefitted too. But you're a fool, as all angels are. I expected the other one to be smarter, but she's foolhardy too." My heart broke, and I closed my eyes as he came in to kill me. Day turned into night as Lily jumped between us, protecting me like she was my guardian angel. When the dust cleared, Lily was lying on the ground.Jake was nowhere to be seen, but I didn't care as I begged Lily to wake up. She slowly opened her eyes and I almost cried with relief. She looked up and smiled a real smile. Pointing upwards, she said, "Mistletoe. Do you know about the human tradition?" "Yes," I replied, and kissed her under the twinkling Christmas lights.
